So Ive been teaching my little kiddos all bout Chinese New Year for the past week or so...we've talked so much a/b it, that one of my sweet little 2 yr olds that comes here is convinced he was born in China(totally wasnt)and tells me and his mom that yes he WAS born in and came from China..lol;0
So anyway..cute little project w/did...mandrian orange trees...I let them use their finger tips to dip in orange ink pads and then they made org's on the trees...
We did Org trees, cause in China..oranges are a very imp part of Chinese New Year dinner...oranges=prosperity according to them..
Some other fun facts bout Chinese New Year that Ive learned:
-it lasts 15 days long, no fixed date, it's celebrated according to the luna calendar
-falls in Jan or Feb each year
-originates from back in 2600 BC
-this year is year of the rabbit
-Before the kick off day, they believe in "spring cleaning" and sweeping out their homes, but not ON the day of new year, or they think you'll sweep out all your good luck that year
-They gather for a reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year, this is most imp dinner of all
-On the 1st day of New Year, all debts must be paid, also no lending on this day
-No curse words on this day
-also, it is said that children get away with whatever they want, cause parents dont want to say no and upset them, it would mean bad luck if they disciplined and the child cried(boy would I have an issue with this one..lol)
-the day is started with eating a sweet treat called "tong sui"
-Gong Xi Fa Cai means congratulations and riches
-new clothes are bought(looove this one)
-Hair is cut
-the giving of red envelopes with $
-Card games are big(my family would love this one too)
-and lastly, a must have at dinner are cookies and mandrian oranges!
So, that's it..I'm sure theres lots more to know and learn..but for now, S's 2, and this is good!
We are super excited to go celebrate the New Year with our good friends at thier first annual Chinese New Year party this weekend!
